In this interview, Dr. Ralph Tomases discusses his childhood in Wilmington during the Great Depression, attending the University of Delaware in the early 1940’s, and his experience as a prisoner of war in World War II. Dr. Tomases earned his dental degree in 1943 and was then inducted into the army, and in 1944 was sent to Europe as a dental officer in the 106th Infantry Division. His unit was stationed on the Belgian-German frontier when the Battle of the Bulge began, and his unit was captured by the German army. Dr. Tomases discusses his experience as a POW, conditions and life in the POW camp, and being liberated by Russian army.
