Governor Jack Markell Officially Declares October 5th, 2014 Raoul Wallenberg Day in Delaware.
New York City, NY – In honor of the bravery, heroism and courage of Raoul Wallenberg, Governor Jack Markell has officially declared October 5th, 2014, as Raoul Wallenberg Day in the State of Delaware. The IRWF initiated a campaign aimed at obtaining official proclamations of “Wallenberg Day” in the United States in 2005. This is the first time that the State of Delaware is joining this initiative. Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat sent to Hungary in June 1944. In just a six-month stay in Budapest, he rescued tens of thousands of Jews. He was never seen again after January 17, 1945, when the Soviets imprisoned him. On October 5th 1981, Raoul Wallenberg was declared an Honorary Citizen of the U.S and on July 9th, 2014, Raoul Wallenberg was given the Congressional Gold Medal during an inspirational ceremony held at the U.S. Capital. The International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation (IRWF) is a non-governmental organization with the mission to develop educational programs, historical research projects and public awareness campaigns based on the values represented by Raoul Wallenberg and other brave Rescuers of the Holocaust.
